Greater Manchester Aviation Exhibition - Overview
Since 1974 Greater Manchester incorporates ten Municipal Boroughs and each of the Boroughs has a rich and varied industrial and scientific history stretching back to the early years of the Industrial Revolution.
As the Industrial Revolution gathered pace and the local population grew Manchester and the surrounding boroughs became a centre for new discoveries, scientific breakthroughs and technological innovation. This has continued through to the present day.
An often used but unattributed quote linked to Manchester is: "What Manchester does today, the rest of the world does tomorrow" and this statement is also applicable to the field of Aviation. This exhibition celebrates how the Manchester area and its people strongly contributed to the history of flight.
The exhibition details the rise of aviation in the area, the many aviation firsts, the innovations, the companies, the airfields, the people and their incredible stories and although there are areas of decline, the continuing skills and capabilities within the area are recognised.
To aid the reader to establish the decades applicable to the storyboards a timeline is added in the header stretching from the pre 1900's through to modern times. An example of this is below, the yellow highlighting indicating the story focuses on the pre 1900's through to 1910.

Also, in the top right hand corner of the storyboards is a small map of Greater Manchester indicating the boroughs that are part of the particular storyboard.
The green areas identify the locality of the subject matter. For example this map indicates the inclusion of Salford, Manchester and Stockport within the story.
A number of Storyboards contain a QR code that links to further information.
If you have a smartphone then you can access the additional content by scanning the QR code with your camera. The example here links to information about early investors in Avro.
