Vulcan Cockpit- Centre Instrument Panel

The Vulcan Centre Instrument Panel, located between the two Pilot Consoles, provides access by both pilots to selected engine performance data together with status and fault indications across the Vulcan's primary flight systems.

Instrument (A) indicates the positioning, viewed from the rear, of the Vulcan's flight control surfaces (elevons) located on the trailing edge of the delta wing. A simulated flight sequence first shows initial *UP-DOWN-LEFT-RIGHT" elevon movements, as the pilots check for FULL AND FREE' movement of the flight controls before take off.

The flight sequence follows with a take off, a cruise, a pair of heading changes, and finishes with a descent and landing.

Instrument (B) shows the changing status of the landing gear throughout the above flight sequence. Green lights indicate gear down and locked, red lights indicate gear in transit between states.

Instrument (C) shows any forward or aft movements of the fuel centre of gravity across the port and starboard fuel tanks. Movements of the fuel C of G would, if not corrected, influence the aircraft balance or trim during flight. This instrument was primarily used by the co-pilot during in-flight refuelling operations. Both pointers should be in a central position if the fuel load is balanced across the aircraft.
