PETER GRAHAM NIELD (Colour Photograph top right)
Peter started his Avro Aeronautical Engineering Apprenticeship at Chadderton in 1953-1956, achieving CI.Mech.Eng. (Chartered Institution of Mechanical Engineers). Most of his working life was in the Structural Materials Test Department at Chadderton and Woodford. Some of his tools and drawing equipment are on display below.
While working with Peter, Steve Abbott made a collection of his discarded sketches and art, some of which is exhibited here. He was an excellent aviation artist, forming the Manchester Aviation Art Society (MAvAS) in 1983, and was their secretary for forty years. MAvAS is now run by active Friends and Members of this Museum.
BRIAN CHARLES LEICESTER (Colour Photograph middle left)
Brian started a four year apprenticeship at Chadderton in August 1971, coming out of his time as a skilled centre lathe turner with full City and Guilds certificates. After an initial 12 months in the training school, he moved into the module section for a further 3 years under the instruction of Mr Eardly to complete his centre lathe training. The
milling instructor at that time was Sam Hawthorn, a Scot with a brilliant dry sense of humour. Brian arrived on the shop floor and was plunged into a piecework system under foreman Jack Brooks. George Moorfield was machine shop supervisor and Barry McAinsh manager over production. On display are many of the tools he made during his apprenticeship.
