Major changes from Nimrod MR1 to MR2

It was always envisaged that the Nimrod MR1 would soon require a complete update of its equipment. Development began with there turn from Boscombe Down of the two MR1 Development aircraft (XV227 & XV229) & the two Prototypes (XV147 & XV148).

(Colour Photograph Above): Changes include the replacement of the old Shackleton ASV-21D Radar with the state of the arts Thorn EMI Searchwater Radar, controlled from this station with a dedicated Ferranti 1600D Computer & Thorn-EMI colour display screen.

(Monochrome Photograph Top Centre): Tac/Nav now Equipped with an 920 ATC Computer & new Ferranti Intertial Navigation System.

(Monochrome Photograph Above): Radar Operator with Duplicated AD470 HF Radio with teletype & On-Line BID860 Encryption unit. Later aircraft had' Secure Voice' communications.

(Monochrome Photograph Lower Centre): Ultra Electronics AQS-901 Acoustics Processing and Display System with its own pair of 920ATC Computers. Capable of monitoring 32 Sonbuoys.
