Avro Aerodrome Woodford (1924 - 2011) - 2
When Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933 his violent attitude forced governments around the world to prepare for this potential aggression. Avro was no exception, they had to expand and progress rapidly both in design and production. The method used to meet this demand was to expand the manufacturing and assembly base of the company funded by the government. See the chart which is a record of the expansion of the floor area 1934 - 1943.
Factory space after this period declined although office and design building fluctuated and changed in line with the business demand.
Many large factories and aviation companies closed and Woodford with pride, finished projects, like Radlett's Handley Page Victor Tanker conversions and Hatfield's Hawker Siddeley HS146 (later the British Aerospace 146, BAe 146 and AVRO RJ). The Assembly and Flight testing being completed at Woodford. Often with the workforce relocating with their aircraft.
The site closed 25th August 2011.
