Avro Aerodrome Woodford (1924 2011) - 1
The Woodford site was purchased by A V Roe & Co Ltd. when they were given notice that Alexandra Park, Hangar Site and Airfield, Air Ministry lease going to expire and that it was not going to be was renewed.
It was announced that:-
At the end of August 1924 all flying would cease. On 17th September all the remaining effects would have to be auctioned off.
The hangars and buildings were to be removed by 30th November.
In the Manchester Guardian it was reported that three of the Hangars were being put up at New Hall Farm Woodford, which was to become the new Avro Aerodrome. The first Hangar was not completed before a storm destroyed it and in the event only one was built. In the early photos of the site a Bessonneau Hangar was also built to increase the factory space; originally the Runway was grass. The hangars were used as the assembly works and test facility.
The Lancashire aero club also had to leave Alexandra Park and for a time A V invited them to build small hangars to store their aircraft at Woodford, until they moved to the new Barton Aerodrome. The old farm buildings were used as a Club house.
