A Threat from War Time Service

During the war years "Call up" to the forces was a threat to the aircraft industry. Many men and women had not served their time in
the industry so they did not have a Union card. Therefore they were liable, as unskilled labour, they could be enlisted for service. The Ministry of Labour agreed with employers that the Unions could make application for Dilutees under a relaxation agreement. These lists were submitted by the A.E.U. For Chadderton or Newton Heath factories records were recorded containing the Man's name, Clock number and occupation and the date submitted.

(Colour Photographs Top showing) - Letter dated 28th April 1940 Letter from Chadderton Management requesting Union approval of relaxation of their Skill status.

(Colour Photographs Bottom showing) - Management was also able to apply to the Union for the updating of an employees status to Semi-skilled or Fitter without dilution.
