Avro Lancaster - Women at War (2)

(Monochrome Photographs - Top Left & Middle)
Women were employed to assemble detail components to the next level. These ladies are fitting bearings into machined castings (left) and riveting castings into skin panel sub-assemblies (middle)

(Monochrome Photograph - Top Right)
Not all components were skinned with Aluminium. Some control surfaces were still skinned in fabric. A close fitting fabric "bag" was stitched around the component and a Doping solution applied which caused the fabric to tighten and set bard as it moulded itself to the structure.

(Monochrome Photograph - Bottom Left)
Not every moment of the working day was serious. Here a single female Inspector helping the men with Lancaster Fuel Tank Inspection much to the amusement of her onlooking workmates in the doorway.
